-valis Pick of the Week
Hail Voyagers! Our Pick this week comes from the storm-beaten Ft. Worth, Texas: The Cush! They've released their fourth LP, Transcendental Heatwave, on Follyphone Records.
Ten tracks of scorching sonics, many reviewers have picked up on the motorik drive at the heart of the album, nowhere more clearly -to me, than on "Highway Brain," a Moon Duo-esque slice of brilliance in an album full of it. "Broken Radio" comes across as anthemic, (and has garnered phone calls whenever I've aired it on the radio show.) The husband-wife duo at the core of the band, Burette and Gabrielle, aided by Josh Daugherty & Todd Harwell, satisfy a lot of different tastes on this one. As our good friend and highly perceptive primate Ryan at Revolt of the Apes sums it up:
" There’s a vitality, imagination and undeniable spirit of motion throughout “Transcendental Heat Wave,” a powerful sense of escape velocity that allows the album to unfold something like a perfectly planned road trip. Allusions to driving color the album – references to being on the road, behind the wheel and just a few transcendental car-lengths away from whatever elements of control and paranoia happen to be flashing their brights at you in this very moment. “Transcendental Heat Wave”? Yeah. We could use a lift. " Indeed.
