-valis Pick of the Week
Hail Voyagers! 2014 nearing, ahead and visible. Yet two weeks remain in 2013 and our Pick this week hails from Perpignan, France: The Limiñanas!
Just released in mid-November, their third album, Costa Blanca, is out on (Chicago's never-disappointing) Trouble In Mind Records.
The French duo of Lio and Mari, augmented by Mu and Nadge, update the '60s French psych' and pop sounds for the new generation. Given there may be quite a few who aren't as familiar with said sounds, it's a strong indicator of the force this pair brings in creating a need to hear what sounds are influencing and informing their own. As Trouble In Mind states:
" Fans of the band will no doubt hear familiar passages; melodic themes that appear & disappear not only over the course of this album, but that also reference The Limiñanas’ entire oeuvre - melodic “jump-cuts” that are sonic echoes of previous tunes & future melodies. Thematically, “Costa Blanca” is an insular record, with subjects that reference Lio’s youth growing up in Spain in the 1970’s near the Mediterranean Sea & lyrics which are nostalgic odes to the music, films, girls, books & cars that shaped his world. "
As for me, having come to their music via prior singles on Trouble In Mind, I found this album to be smart, sassy, and a mental vacation. It took me somewhere. I believe it'll do the same for you, too. High recommend.
You can listen to the archived stream here; or, hear it this Friday, on The Dead Man's Turn Me On, Dead Man show on Live365, where it's heard every Friday at noon eastern time, as well as Mr. Atavist's Sunrise Ocean Bender show, heard every Monday from 1 to 3 am eastern, on WRIR in Richmond, VA.
Adding the Pick of the Week to their show is Dogs Got A Bone out of Edinburgh, Scotland, from 10pm to midnight, Mondays, U.K. time, (adjust accordingly,) on Belter Radio. Thanks Col Chant!
