For a summation of the contents I've turned to good friend and long-time BJM freak, SR-71, a/k/a The Blackbird. A trusted ear and mind, always. Here's what he came back with for this post:
" Of all the many varied rabbit holes we've followed Anton Newcombe down musically, who would have ever guessed that sobriety and fatherhood would end up being one of the most fruitful and satisfying? Many of the BJM faithful looked at Revelation as a return to form, and with Newcombe's subsequent collaboration with Tess Parks, I Declare Nothing, and now this all killer no filler mini album, it looks like the enigmatic mastermind has, like his idol Bowie, found a truly creative nest in Berlin. And, yes, brief though it may be, the album manages to make time for an excellent cover of the 13th Floor Elevators' Dust featuring The Black Angels' Alex Maas on electric jug. From start to finish, this is one thingy wingy that is essential listening for all psychedelic ears. "

Forever and ever amen...

Hail Voyagers! Welcome to the New Year, and our first Pick of the Week: from Athens, Georgia: French Exit! Led by AJ Griffin, (of Circulatory System/Olivia Tremor Control, as well as one-off [?] Laminated Cat,)French Exit also includes Steve Hendriksen, Evan Amburn, and Derek Almstead. Given AJ's CV you wouldn't be too far wrong in thinking you know what you're getting going into this listening experience. Fair enough. I'm here to tell you, despite all you think you know, you'll come out of the experience wanting to hit repeat and do it all over again. And again. Whilst Beatlesque is strewn throughout the various reviews -and they're not wrong, for me AJ funnels it all through a Sean O'Hagan-like The High Llamas filter, (circa Cold & Bouncy,) via The Idle Race. Perhaps upon reflection it's the overarching playfulness of the music on offer here in this debut which leads me to the prior references. Like The High Llamas there's the unexpected squiggles and bleeps which come in at the perfect time and are never overused to the detriment of the song. Vocally is where I'm reminded of Jeff Lynne's Idle Race. I'll post a couple of tracks as examples and you can judge for yourself. Me, I recommend. Highly.

Peter Quinnell (vocals, bass guitar, mellotron), Brian Webster (guitar, keyboards), Lori Black (tambourine, vocals), and Jim Moreland (drums), once again show their penchant for recreating a bygone era and just as smartly update it. It's perpetual '67. Odessey and Oracle, Forever Changes, and a bit of Beatlesque whimsy and humor. Brilliantly done, too. An aural time machine. You'll want to take this trip, believe me. Highly recommend.

Hail Voyagers! Our Pick this week calls Goiania, Brasil, home: Boogarins! They've just released their second album, Manual, out on Other Music!

As stated on the Other Music page for the album: " Manual has the same dual meanings in Portuguese and English: “to work with your hands” and “an instruction book.” With the full title being Manual, ou guia livre de dissolução dos sonhos(Manual, or free guide to the dissolution of dreams), the album should more so be viewed as a sort of diary or dream journal. "

Quite simply, I found the album endlessly fascinating. There's really no one else on this huge orb making music like Boogarins. Perhaps it's because they eschew singing in English in favor of their native tongue, Portuguese. While they're certainly not alone in that -Dungen rapidly comes to mind, it's in the overall feel of the music on offer, a melting pot of cross-cultural signifiers as a means to achieve the reason for being. The message is the music. Period. We who don't speak Portuguese aren't weighed down by the lyrics; we can ascertain merits of each track and the album as a whole solely on the feeling created while doing so. Me, I'll take it. Again and again.

Hail Voyagers! What a Pick we have this week: from dedicated fellow blogger, Nathan Ford of The Active Listener, based in New Zealand!
An all-around go-to site for both new and classic psychedelia, his "Sampler" volumes of current practitioners is up to Volume 36! What we celebrate and recognize today however is his curation of the Nuggets 2 Revisited compilation! Available for as little as zero at the site's Bandcamp page.

(* Art by Alan Davidson of the Kitchen Cynics )

Based on the 2001 Rhino compilation, originally titled Nuggets, Vol. 2: Original Artyfacts from the British Empire & Beyond,( a sequel to the highly successful Nuggets compilation lovingly assembled by Lenny Kaye back in 1972, and expanded in 1998.) What we have here is a whopping 29 bands covering 29 different tracks from the 109 from the Box Set. Amazing. I'm an unabashed lover of cover versions; I get to hear an interpretation which either extends or bends the original into something wholly other, breathing new life into it. Here we have a take on Fire's "Father's Name Was Dad," by Telafonica, which goes for a subdued approach and yet still satisfies -or should, those of us who've heard the original 100+ times; The Blue Giant Zeta Puppies take on the Marc Bolan-led John's Children's "Desdemona," rips through it with a roaring outta' the gate unlike the original, full thrust! Suffice to say: there's something for everyone here! Highest recommend, and massive rounds of applause to Nathan and the bands participating!!!

Hail Voyagers! Et, bon Mercredi! Our Pick this week comes from Rennes, France: Baston! Their new release, an EP entitled Gesture, is out on Howlin Banana Records.

At seven track, six originals plus a cover of The Beach Boys "Honda," it's a tidy entry point into the band's own take on multiple genres and the bands they're clearly indebted to and in love with. Some reviewers have pointed out a Stone Roses sound, whilst others liken their sound to the surf-laden shoegazers, of which we know many. My personal favorite is the nearly seven minute long "Gefahr," which recalls Echo & the Bunnymen to these ears. Regardless of who you may hear in the sounds it's certainly an EP which satisfies on multiple levels for the roughly 24 minutes running time. Deserves your ears in my opinion.

Hail Voyagers! Back again, from a brief hiatus to recharge, regroup, and reassess. Our Pick this week has their HQ in Bozeman, Montana: Donovan's Brain! The collective's ninth album features a stellar -and all-star, cast for this effort. Joining mainstays Ron Sanchez and Deniz Tek are drummer Ric Parnell (Atomic Rooster/Spinal Tap,)bassist Tom Stevens, (Long Ryders,)guitarist Matt Piucci,(!), (Rain Parade,)vocals, 6 & 12-string guitar, etc. by Bobby Sutliff, (The Windbreakers, etc.,)guitar and vocals Scott Sutherland, and Kris Wilkinson-Hughes on background vocals and harmony. Wow.
Comprised of 14 tracks, there's not a duffer in the bunch! How could there be with that kind of talent?! In truth it's an embarrassment of riches on offer. Side 2 especially so. My favorites: "Wedding Bell Ring," "Lightning Life," "Light In Your Window," and the epic closer "Sailing Off The Edge." Pedigreed and powerful, this veteran Aussie four-piece, Dom Mariani - Vocals & Guitar, Greg Hitchcock - Vocals & Guitar, Warren Hall - Drums, and Stu Loasby - Bass, seemingly found the mushrooms while at the crossroads. With writing supplied by Mariani and Hitchcock, longtime friends with a love for psychedelia AND the blues, we listeners are treated to an album of visceral songs with liberal doses of what we like in our music. Mariani and Hitchcock should be no strangers to music fans around the planet; Mariani has led The Stems and DM3; Hitchcock is formerly of should-have-beens You Am I. As their Alive bio states: " With a healthy nod to Early ’70’s Australian Psych/Blues/Boogie from the likes of Buffalo, Coloured Balls, The Aztecs and latter era Masters Apprentices, “Demon Blues” represents Mariani & Hitchcock’s love of hard hitting bell-bottom blues." Agreed. I think you will, too.

Veteran -and inveterate, psych-poppers Jon Anders Strand, Jørn Smedslund, Harald Beckstrøm, Øystein Jevanord, Lars Fredrik Beckstrøm, & Eystein Hopland, collectively known as Dog Age, release this new album four years after the acclaimed Reefy Seadragon. Like its predecessor the band knows their way around a tune very well indeed thank you. (What the hell else are ya' gonna' do during that nine month Winter?) While this new one certainly extends the catalog to seven, taken on its own merit outside that rich past, you'd have to say it is worthy of praise. So, let's. Lead track, "Opening Up the Park," is an almost carnivalesque Abbey Road invitation, insistent drumming pushing the pace and the right amount of efx to let you know there's nothing normal in here. Further in and the not-normal continues. Try to relax during "Sonatine"! Pure "Because" to these ears.
Dog Age keeping exploring the rabbit hole and after a quarter century of digging they keep finding all manner of substances the effects of which they share, thankfully, with us. Gods bless Dog Age and the Psychedelic Beer Club!!! (Also, cover art by good friend & good guy Mick Dillingham.)

Album opener, "Chambermaid," is a stomping invitation to the rest of the work; reminds me in quite a few ways of several '70s albums in its use of instrumentation and vocals to achieve anthemic heights. "Modern Times," continues course and certainly reinforces the notion the band are no novices to their instruments and what they want to do with them. Mid-way through, "Traveling" is the highlight for me. A slow-burning -and long-burning at nearly eight minutes, affair of vistas-in-the-mind creation. A band to watch. And we will.

For those who've followed Nathan Henderson's various projects over the last decade this comes as no surprise that Sun Mahshene is yet another whipsmart, menacing brace of rockers working for the common goal of delivering Henderson's vision of what music can -and should, be. As their Facebook profile states for members: Nathan Henderson (Guitars, Vocals, Noise, Everything) Live: Lydia Des Dolles (Vocals) Graham Matthews (Guitar, Noise, Feedback) Chris Keegan (Guitar, Noise, Feedback, Wah) Mark Matthews (Bass) Gordon Keenan (Bass) Mark Brennan (Bass) William O'Reilly (Drums) David Murray (Drums).
That's a lot of people in service to the music! This new EP, ahead of what we hope is a full-length long player, delivers a wallop in the title track along with two demo' tracks. The title track is the star. See and hear:

Salute Nathan's efforts and hope that long-awaited LP is delivered! GO NATHAN!

Mike Turi - Vocals / Synth, Taejon Romanik - Guitar, Yegor Mackey - Bass, and Marco Piro - Drums, are Wild Wild Wets and the ensemble punches a hole in the cloud cover with this first effort. (We understand there's a new one being assembled at this writing!) With tracks like "Blacks Bridge," "14th Floor," and "Floating," the band are proving to be a force. No strangers to this blog, they've been in the Brain Buzzin' Best Of lists with seemingly every release they've put out. This new one merits attention on its own and stands up to the redwoods already in the discography. If anything, in my ears, they're a bit more forceful on this outing. A sprawling 15 tracks and 74 minutes, there's just enough calm in the storm to give the listener time to breathe and reflect before the next onslaught begins. Opening strongly with "Strange Vibrations," they hit full stride by track three, "Stars," and follow up through track six with unrelenting sonic bluster. By the time track 13 rolls into the headphones you'll be upright or just up....worthy and worthwhile. So say I.

Ostensibly a one-man band, Neale James does it all. (We're unabashed one-man band lovers here at Trip Inside This House. See: Squires of the Subterrain, Jamie Laboz, Jacco Gardiner, etc., and so on.) Talent and vision, plus a will to make what he's hearing in his head a reality. Creator. On this effort Juleah seems more restrained, or perhaps more in command of her Muse(s.) Simpler terms? Languidly propulsive. The title track and album opener is a virtual signifier of all that's to come, and a keeper on repeat play. (At least here.) She's in a zone throughout and it's a great zone!
Also worth mentioning is "Sommertraum," a Summer dream indeed! Five minutes of pure pineal extract, given over for your own auditory pleasure. GO JULEAH!

52 years on, line-up changes and life-as-it-happens, and Phil May and Dick Taylor are still providing us with relevant, rockin' music which has to be heard. Ably assisted by Jack Greenwood on drums, George Woosey on bass and rhythm guitar, as well as Frank Holland who supplies 2nd guitar and Mellotron, this -their twelfth studio album, and first in seven years, pulls together virtually everything we've ever loved about the band. Opener "The Same Sun" is a slice of SF Sorrow era sturm und....while their take on The Byrds' "Renaissance Fair" is given perfect Pretties treatment. Also, there's a revisiting of a May/Taylor composition dating back to '67, "Turn My Head," which finally gets proper and deserved attention. Fireproof suit not included! May all the gods bless The Pretty Things!

Hail Voyagers! From Porto, Portugal: 10 000 Russos! Their self-titled debut LP is out now, via the always-reliable, ridiculously outstanding Fuzz Club Records. GO Casper!

The band have clearly digested the works of Neu! and others of that ilk. Together this three-piece band, Pedro Pestana, André Couto, and João Pimenta, create a maelstrom of delicious sounds to satisfy those seeking the high energy driving psychedelia. UsVsUs, the album's second track, is a perfect example:

There's a great interview with the band from the Fuzz Club site, here, which includes a telling explanation of the band's name. As the Dayz Of Purple And Orange blog so aptly sums it up:
" This really is an immense piece of work...the imagination, the creativity and the sheer scope of the album is huge and, if given the due time and attention it deserves, will cement 10,000 Russos' place in many a 'Best Of...' list of 2015. This is the work of a band who care not a whit for genres and categories but produce the music that they want to produce; there are no sidelong glances to what other bands are doing, no 'jumping on the bandwagon'. I've made no secret of my love for many a record label on the pages of this blog: Cardinal Fuzz, Sulatron, Captcha, BBiB amongst others .....and on this, alongside the Sonic Jesus release and the 'Reverb Conspiracy' LPs, Fuzz Club are well and truly up there with the best."

Highly recommended. 10 000 Russos!

The band, Sean Morrow (guitar, vocals), Eric Oppitz (bass, organ), and Richard Sawoscinski (drums, percussion), allow themselves the time and space to stretch ideas out further and further, both inward and outward simultaneously. We listeners are the benefactors of this new creative effort. From their page on Mongolic:
" Their new full length recording Desert Brain not only brings Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor’s aesthetic to life, but brings to fruition years spent planning the ultimate immersive listening experience. “I think we were a bit scared to make it,” says Oppitz. “It took us much longer than a typical record of a collection of songs would have taken us. Not only did we have to write the songs, but we had to compose the transitions between them and then think about how each song fit into the overall concept of the entire record.”
Shimmering layers of sound slide and collide across Desert Brain, which was crafted to be an end-to-end experience that’s more a shifting moodscape than collection of individual songs. “Lyrically and musically, we really tried to tap into the chaos, celebration, and tragedy that has affected us over the last four years,” says Sawoscinski. “Since our last release Spectra Spirit we’ve collectively faced marriage, eviction, success, breakups, the death of a good friend to addiction, career changes and displacement.”
While the process of writing and recording a unified album like Desert Brain was challenging, the reward is a seamless, immersive journey for the listener. From the opening, flanged guitar strains of “Seventh Scene” to the juggernaut of chugging noise at the center of “What’s Your Cloud Nine 37” to the building waves of vocals, drums and tension that drive the title track, Desert Brain has texture, hypnotizing rhythm and a sonic landscape you won’t soon forget. The album, in keeping with Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor’s tradition of covering all aesthetic bases, will be released on clear and splattered blue vinyl. "

Whilst leaning towards a more psychedelic-pop approach on most tracks, (to these ears,) the band does show occasional flashes of heavier hitting material here, too. Fans of Jacco Gardner, Temples, etc., will find a lot to like. Recommended.

While the press pack notes: “a throbbing delta blues psychedelic gloop that collides with the communal vibe of some of their Krautrock forefathers.” I'm going to only half-agree; the description might've fit the debut -and it does, this new effort brings a bit more city to their music, and with a style and panache all their own. Several tracks have that swagger and pulsating rhythm akin to The Doors, Primal Scream, and Ty Segall-like stomp-around. I would go so far as to say that half this new album wouldn't have -couldn't have, been made at the time of the debut, three years ago.
Growth is good. Even the Delta is growing. This one has a bit of the Rhine, Elbe, and Spree, to it. Bottom line: it's a keeper and -as a step further in the pair's future, I like where they're going. A lot.

Ten tracks of scorching sonics, many reviewers have picked up on the motorik drive at the heart of the album, nowhere more clearly -to me, than on "Highway Brain," a Moon Duo-esque slice of brilliance in an album full of it. "Broken Radio" comes across as anthemic, (and has garnered phone calls whenever I've aired it on the radio show.) The husband-wife duo at the core of the band, Burette and Gabrielle, aided by Josh Daugherty & Todd Harwell, satisfy a lot of different tastes on this one. As our good friend and highly perceptive primate Ryan at Revolt of the Apes sums it up:
" There’s a vitality, imagination and undeniable spirit of motion throughout “Transcendental Heat Wave,” a powerful sense of escape velocity that allows the album to unfold something like a perfectly planned road trip. Allusions to driving color the album – references to being on the road, behind the wheel and just a few transcendental car-lengths away from whatever elements of control and paranoia happen to be flashing their brights at you in this very moment. “Transcendental Heat Wave”? Yeah. We could use a lift. " Indeed.

From their press release:
"Plastic Man are an Italian garage psych band formed in 2012. Influenced by beat, psychedelic, nuggets compilations and late 60's music in general, the trio from Florence (Raffaele - guitar and lead vocals, Diletta - bass guitar and backing vocals, Fabio - drums) mixes retrò and modern styles producing songs with a neo-psychedelic flavour. Their music involves also other elements like acid rock, rockabilly, surf, progressive, garage punk and stoner. The effects on voice and guitar, such as tremolo, fuzz, delay and reverb, reveal their aim: reproducing a fresh, natural, genuine and up-to-date garage psych sound. Plastic Man's first release is a 4 track EP in vinyl produced by Misty Lane (November 2013). After over a year of live shows in Italy and a tour in France (April 2014), the band's debut album ("Don't Look At The Moon") was released on 9 March 2015 on Black Candy Records."

I found the descriptions of their sound to be quite accurate. Most of all this debut long player shows a band having fun and letting it rip. "Rolling Machine" may be the best illustration of this ethos pervading the album.
Hail Voyagers! Our Pick this week, from the Wiltshire area of England: Cranium Pie! Their latest effort, (already sold out!,) is titled Mechanisms, Part 2, is out as a double LP by those finely-attuned & crazy folks at Fruits de Mer!

Still available digitally via the band's own Bandcamp page, we find on offer 15 tracks of weird, wild, and ultimately wonderful space-prog-psych, wheren our protagonists live up to the "Moonrakers" appellation. Good friend and prog savant Jerry Kranitz, of Aural Innovations, starts off describing it thusly: "It took nearly four years but Cranium Pie have finally released the follow up to 2011’s fantastic Mechanisms Part 1. Mechanisms Part 2 is a 2-LP set with a single approximately 19 minute track on each side. Though untitled, each side has distinguishable segments, though they typically flow fairly seamlessly from one to the next. But titles mean little here as the whole is like a tour de force of Prog-Psych-Kosmiche Rock circa 1969-73. Follow along as I stream of conscious describe this 4 sided experience and you’ll get a flavor for what Mechanisms Part 2 is about… " (REad the rest here.)

Or, Oregano Rathbone's concise head-nailing: ""a roiling soundwave that conjoins Caravan/Egg organ textures with cabalistic, linear grooves straight from the Neu! road map. Cranium Pie exist in the magical interstice between psych and prog, so you’ll search in vain for the intemperate showing-off of the latter while basking in the polychromatic flashes of the former" (Record Collector)

Here's a track to enjoy as a taste:

Seven tracks and 44 minutes of pure pummeling joy. They've clearly accessed the local cash crop to take us to Aldebaran. And leave us there. We are stoned immaculate. As Cardinal Fuzz puts it:
"Pan is the next logical step for White Manna, as tracks flow from guitar blasting amplifier destroying worship to super-cosmische space rock epics and then comes back for more ferocious Stooges pounding fuzzed up Hawkwind inspired freak flag waving wildness. Inspired by the Northern Californian landscape, the natural mystic of Pan is informed by, as guitarist David Johnson states, “…the trees, beaches, and open spaces where we live are all integral parts of our approach to music.” The album recording was dialled in at the Compound Manila and laid to tape at Lucky Cat Recording by the legendary Phil Manley. The psychedelic mazes on the cover art are brought to you by the amazing, AP Shrewsbury. Pan is an album of a band at the height of their game."

They'll be opening skulls at this weekend's Levitation Fest, playing Friday, May 8th, at 4:15pm.
Smoke 'em if you got 'em...

Joni Seppänen, Paltsa-Kai Salama, Onni Nieminen and Lauri Lyytinen, recapture -or continue, the swagger and venom of their 2013 debut, (which included one of my personal favorite tracks of the year: "Fucking Up",) by giving us a veritable hornet's nest of stinging tracks on this effort. Beginning with "Everything And Nothing," on through to the finale, "Shine High," the album is laden with spot-the-influence brilliance, imho. I hear Stones-like blues on "Helpless," and Screamadelica-era Primals on the aforementioned closer. Perhaps a pinch of what makes Singapore Sling so infectious, too...try it. Recommended. Highly.
