-valis Pick of the Week

Hail Voyagers! Our Pick this week, from Saarbrücken, Germany: Pretty Lightning! The duo of Sebastian Haas and Christian Berghoff have just released their second album, (and first in three years,) A Magic Lane Of Light And Rain, via the always-reliable Cardinal Fuzz and Sound Effect Records.

While the press pack notes: “a throbbing delta blues psychedelic gloop that collides with the communal vibe of some of their Krautrock forefathers.” I'm going to only half-agree; the description might've fit the debut -and it does, this new effort brings a bit more city to their music, and with a style and panache all their own. Several tracks have that swagger and pulsating rhythm akin to The Doors, Primal Scream, and Ty Segall-like stomp-around. I would go so far as to say that half this new album wouldn't have -couldn't have, been made at the time of the debut, three years ago. Growth is good. Even the Delta is growing. This one has a bit of the Rhine, Elbe, and Spree, to it. Bottom line: it's a keeper and -as a step further in the pair's future, I like where they're going. A lot.

Also, Pretty Lightning will be taking the stage at the Eindhoven Psych Lab this weekend, June 5 & 6!
